Military - Fylingdales - Ballistic Missile Early Warning System Station - RAF - Fylingdales Moors, North Yorskhire

The American and British commanders at Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System station, 800ft up on Fylingdales Moor, North Yorkshire. (l-r) Lieutenant-Colonel Bill Moore (American Project Officer), Group Captain C. S. Betts (Commanding Officer, RAF Fylingdales) and Colonel G. W. Hunt (Commanding Officer, USAF Fylingdales). The three huge radomes, each as tall as a 15 storey building, house tracking aerials 84ft in diameter. The protective shell consists of 1,646 panels, each six inches thick and made from a sandwich of laminated fibre glass and heavy honeycomb paper. The station, operated by the RAF and the North American Air Defence Command, also comprises a large electricity generating station, extensive workshop and store, administrative offices and staff messes. The station has been built by Britain and equipped by America. Reaching far into space, Fylingdales will give Britain four minutes warning of a missile attack, enabling the V Bomber force to take the air and be safe from destruction as well as being capable of retaliation if required. Fylingdales completes a chain of BMEWS stations, the others are at Thule, Greenland and Clear, Alaska
