Eyemouth - EU cod laws

A fishing boat heads out to sea at Eyemouth harbour, in the Scottish Borders. The small Scottish fishing town of Eyemouth has experienced tragedy from the sea but now the community faces a new and even greater threat from across the water. * Residents still remember the disaster of 1881 when 189 fishermen died within sight of their loved ones as their boats struggled to reach the harbour. And now they fear for the future of their fishing community once again as the European Commission sets out its proposals to conserve cod fish stocks. European scientists last month proposed a blanket ban on cod fishing - a move which would effectively close the seas around Scotland and throw thousands of fishermen on the dole. 19/12/03: A new European fishing deal was secured today, after 30 hours of gruelling talks in Brussels. Agreement came after all-night negotiations as fisheries ministers fought to head off another round of drastic cuts to avoid the collapse of cod stocks. 07/12/04: According to a report from the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, fishing should be banned in almost a third of UK waters to protect the marine environment and save threatened fish species. Today the commission finds that policies to control fishing have failed and radical change is needed to shift their focus from commercial over-exploitation to long-term protection of the marine environment.
