The Royal yacht Britannia, dressed overall and carrying Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal family, passes the nuclear submarine HMS Valiant as she goes through the lines of the Western Fleet assembled in Torbay, Devon for the two-day review. Britannia was steaming to her anchorage at the eastern end of the lines and later members of the Royal family were due to visit units of the Fleet.

Sailing - Singlehanded Crossing of the Atlantic - Francis Chichester - Plymouth

Francis Chichester sets sail in his yawl Gipsy Moth III from Plymouth for his second singlehanded crossing of the Atlantic. Two years ago, sailing this same craft, he won the first singlehanded trans-Atlantic race. This time he hopes to make the crossing inside 30 days. Mr Chichester will carry a radio transmitter and will be in touch with Britain throughout the crossing. He was chief navigation instructor at the RAF Central Flying School in the last war.
