A gnome keeps his nose just above the floodwater, Wednesday October 12, 2005, at Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Torrential rain has caused flooding chaos throughout Britain with emergency services stretched to the limit. The prolonged downpours that hit most of the country yesterday are continuing overnight, affecting hundreds of homes and forcing the closure of many roads. Among the worst hit areas are south-west Scotland, west Wales and Cumbria. See PA Story WEATHER Floods. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Photo credit should read: David Cheskin/PA.
