A small boy in naval uniform produces a smart sailer's salute for PRINCESS ELIZABETH when she arrives at the New Cross redevelopment scheme to view Manchester's 6, 000th post-war dwelling, a flat occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Egerton. Accompanying her is the woman Lord Mayor of Machester, Miss MARY KINGSHILL-JONES. With the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess has been paying her first visit to Lancashire, the second day of the two day tour being spent in Manchester.

78th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II
As part of the tercentenary celebrations, The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, fire a 62 gun salute on the banks of the river Thames in front of the Tower of London, to mark the 78th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the second time the Regiment has been granted the privilege to fire a salute from the Tower and are the only unit other than the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) to do so.
