Glasgow Central Station safety
Signal lights are all turned to red and lines stand empty at Glasgow Central station following Railtrack's announcement that it has closed a section of the West Coast main line. The cause of the closure was blamed on track maintenance in the wake of the Hatfield crash. * 30/6/03: Network Rail has announced that it will cost 54 billion to run the railways over the next 10 years. The infrastructure company, which has replaced Railtrack, also confirmed that 'around 2, 000' of its staff would be losing their jobs over the next three years.

Steam train 'Duchess of Hamilton'
'The Duchess of Hamilton' the Royal Scot leaves Rugby this morning (Staurday) after stopping to take on 5, 000 gallons of water. The first steam-hauled train to leave Euston for Glasgow in 32 years, the 'Duchess of Hamilton' will go into semi-retirement after completing the 401-mile run, the longest journey for a preserved engine. The scene at Rainhill Station, between Liverpool and Manchester, as thousands swarmed onto the track to get a final look at Britain's last steam train. Hundreds of steam enthusiasts made the journey aboard the ten-coach train, the Stanier 'Black Five' locomotive on the 314 mile round trip from Liverpool to Carlisle via Manchester.
