The scene at Rainhill Station, between Liverpool and Manchester, as thousands swarmed onto the track to get a final look at Britain's last steam train. Hundreds of steam enthusiasts made the journey aboard the ten-coach train, the Stanier 'Black Five' locomotive on the 314 mile round trip from Liverpool to Carlisle via Manchester.

Tunnelling teams from Britain and France meet and create the first ground-based connection to the continent since the Ice Age. A milestone is reached during the building of the Channel Tunnel when the final underground section between the Kent coast and the terminal site broke through.
