Tornado arrives at National Railway Museum

Steam enthusiasts gather at the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York as Tornado (left) the first steam locomotive to be built in Britain for fifty years arrives at the museum where it will be linked to Mallard ahead of towing the famous engine up the East Coast Main Line to Shildon, County Durham, where Mallard will be displayed at Locomotion, the NRM's sister museum.

Transport - Heritage Railway - Bluebell Line's First Run - Sheffield Park, Sussex

Preparing the old locomotive Bluebell at Sheffield Park, Sussex, for reopening of the Bluebell Line. Paul Willis, 18, is on the loco and hands part of the funnel to Harold May, general manager of the new Bluebell Line. Also pictured is Albert Mills, permanent way inspector. The Bluebell Line, so called because it runs through 4-and-half-miles of the prettiest Sussex countryside, was closed by British Railways as uneconomic, but has been put back into working order by a group of enthusiasts. It will operate at weekends and in the summer. The locomotive Bluebell was formerly with the South Coast and Chatham Railway.

Transport - New Euston Station - London

British Rail's new Euston station, London, which the Queen officially opens on Monday, was visited by the Press, and proved to be just the ticket for the modern traveller. This picture shows the new ticket office. The ticket counter is 80ft long with a low screen between the passenger and the ticket clerk. Meeting it at right angles is another counter, 85 feet long, completely open which deals with enquiries, reservations, travel to Ireland, and includes a portion for the London Tourist Board. Euston, the oldest main line rail terminal in London, has been completely rebuilt over the last five years at a cost of 15 million, and is now one of the most modern in Europe.
