8th January - On this Day in History - 1745
Picturesque Stirling Castle is shrouded in early morning autumn mist. The castle, which dominates the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, has been witness to much of the history of Scotland and has been attacked or besieged as least 16 times over its history which stretches back to the early 1100s.

Workmen build a breakwater to protect the foundations of the old packhorse bridge at Allerford, near Porlock, Somerset. The stream has been slowly washing away the foundations of the bridge, which dates from the middle ages.
