1908 London Olympic Games - Marathon - Dorando Pietri - The White City Stadium
Italian Dorando Pietri about to break the tape to win the 1908 London Olympic Marathon. Pietri was later disqualified for having been assisted by his manager whilst in a state of collapse. More recently the man on the right assisting Dorando Pietri is believed to be the British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this however is not a proven fact.
Equestrian - Badminton Horse Trials - Whitbread Trophy - Jane Bullen - Badminton House
The Queen, who celebrates her 42 birthday today, at Badminton House, the ancestral home of the Duke of Beaufort (l,) presents the Whitbread Trophy to 19-year-old Jane Bullen (r) after she had won the Badminton Horse Trials. She rode a faultless clear round in the jumping test on her 13-year-old Chestnut, 'Our Nobby', the smallest horse in the competition.
