HMV Nipper mascot
A lookalike of "Nipper" the HMV dog. 07/09/99: HMV bosses have launched a nationwide search for a new Jack Russell to pose as Nipper. After 10 years in the job the current dog is to retire and the company wants to find a replacement. *...who loves crowds and being treated as a celebrity. Nipper had earlier featured in the painting His Master's Voice by artist Francis Barraud (shown in background) and both the phrase and image were adopted by the Gramophone Company. 23/01/2000: EMI, who hold a 43% stake in the HMV group, has confirmed it is in talks with Time Warner to merge their music divisions, creating the world's largest music company.
Weather - Floods Protest - Pickering
Residents of Pickering in North Yorkshire sat down on living room furniture they moved into the river, which runs through the town, to recreate the scenes they faced in the devastating floods of last year. Topsy Clinch (seated left), 91, who was flooded out of her home, was one of those there to draw attention to the lack of flood defences in the town, along with Gordon Clitheroe and Kath Grayston. The residents claim the Government pulled the plug on funding for flood defences for the town after the Environment Agency spent 750, 000 five years ago designing a viable scheme.

Art - Auction - The Judgment of Paris - London
The scene during the auction of Sir Peter Paul Rubens paintings at Christie's in London. Bids are being made for a modello painting, "Samson and Delilah", which was sold for 24, 000 guineas to the Hallsborough gallery in London.On the wall behind auctioneer Ivan Chance is "The Judgment of Paris" a Rubens painting, owned by Edna Savage, bought in 1933 in a job lot of pictures. It failed to meet its reserve price and was bought in at 24, 000 guineas.
