News - Mini Tea Machine - Hermione Pardoe - London

Hermione Pardoe samples a cup of tea from the Mini Tea machine shown in London. The old-style kettle and teapot, likely to be replaced in many offices by the machine, stand on the top. The Mini Tea, entirely British in design and manufacture, brews tea from the leaf and delivers it into a disposable cup. The machine also dispenses coffee and chocolate.

Science and Technology - Talking Computer For The Home - London

Actress Jacqueline Pearce (scheming Servalan from the television series Blake's 7) confronts the first talking computer for the home, launched in London by Texas Instruments of Bedford. This small version, selling at 995, brings push-button computing power into the home for education, personal finance, record-keeping and entertainment, and uses plug-in command modules that are pre-programmed so even the very young can use them. The 14-inch colour TV monitor can also be used as a normal television set.

Industry - Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station - Chapelcross, Dumfriesshire

A precipitator unit for burst slug detection at Chapelcross nuclear power station. The instrument can measure a fracture in a reactor the size of a pinprick. The 40 million building on a disused airfield will increase Britain's supplies of military plutonium and when in full production will provide some 140 megawatts of electricity for the National Grid. Its other three reactors will be commissioned at intervals throughout the remainder of this year. Construction of the Chapelcross station - which is of the same type as Calder Hall, Cumberland, the first nuclear power station in the world to produce electricity on an industrial scale - was begun in October 1955.
