King George VI Presenting Shamrock - Chelsea Barracks, London

Honouring the half-centenary of the Regiment's founding, King George VI presented shamrock to the 1st Battalion, the Irish Guards, during a ceremonial parade at the Chelsea Barracks in London on St Patrick's Day. Wearing the uniform of the Irish Guards, of whom he is Colonel-in-Chief, he is presenting a tray of shamrock to an officer, for distribution to other ranks.

Horse racing - 1958 Grand National - Arthur Freeman - Aintree

Thirty lengths in front, the Irish horse Mr What, with Arthur Freeman racing in the saddle, passes the post to win the 1958 Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, Liverpool. Mr What, trained in Ireland, is owned by David J Coughlan, a 58-year-old chemist from Bray, County Wicklow.
