Great North Eastern Railway has invested 30 million in the refit of all 302 passenger car interiors in their electric 225 fleet. Extra legroom for passengers in standard accommodation, seats with better back support, fresh coffee-making facilities and electric power sockets for laptops are among the improvements.
Signs to Save Red Squirrels
A red squirrel in the woods at Wallington, Northuberland, nr Ponteland, where local wildlife lover Penny Hewitt, 50, has erected signs alerting motorists to the native squirrels in the Darrass Hall area. The native squirrels, under threat from increasing numbers of grey squirrels, forage for food in the large gardens in Ponteland, but many fall foul of speeding motorists, with Penny having counted nine victims in recent months.

Sport - Knighthood - Sir Stanley Matthews - Blackpool
Stanley Matthews, who received a knighthood in the New Year's Honours List, pictured reading one of the many messages of congratulations that have arrived at his Blackpool home from across the world. Stanley, the first professional footballer to receive a knighthood, will be 50 next month, and retires at the end of the season.
