Weather - Floods Protest - Pickering

Residents of Pickering in North Yorkshire sat down on living room furniture they moved into the river, which runs through the town, to recreate the scenes they faced in the devastating floods of last year. Topsy Clinch (seated left), 91, who was flooded out of her home, was one of those there to draw attention to the lack of flood defences in the town, along with Gordon Clitheroe and Kath Grayston. The residents claim the Government pulled the plug on funding for flood defences for the town after the Environment Agency spent 750, 000 five years ago designing a viable scheme.

Environment - River Thames flood warning - Discovery and Wellington - London

The surface of the Thames seems as high as the pavement of the Victoria Embankment, London, this afternoon, when Scotland Yard issued a flood warning drawing attention to the possibility of exceptionally high tide in the river Thames and Medway. At almost parapet level are the Discovery (right), Scott's old Antarctic expedition ship, and the Wellington (background), headquarters ship of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.

Weather - 1958 Floods - Leicestershire

As flood water swirls in the front garden, Mr S. Raven of Leicester Road, Sharnford, Leicestershire, stands on a windowsill to hand up a hot meal to his wife on the floor above. The food had been prepared and delivered by women church members, who were working to help people whose homes had been invaded by the floods which have followed heavy rain.
