Former Notts County and England centre forward Tommy Lawton pulling pints behind the bar at the Magna Carta Inn at Lowdham, Nottinghamshire where he is the publican. Tommy Lawton started his football career at Burnley before moving to Everton and then Chelsea. He then signed for Third division Notts County for a record fee of £20, 000. After scoring 90 goals for the club he then moved to Brentford before finishing his playing career at Arsenal. After Managing Kettering Town and Notts County, Tommy Lawton became the Landlord at the Magna Carta.

Film Actress of the Year Maggie Smith with Stage Actor of the Year Paul Scofield at London's Hilton Hotel where they picked up their awards from the Variety Club of Great Britain at it's 35th Annual show business awards luncheon. The actress was acclaimed for her performance in "A Room with a View" and Scofield for his performance in !I'm not Rappaport"

Tenor Josef Locke (real name Joseph McLaughlin) who appeared at a bankruptcy court, in Blackpool, in connection with an alleged tax debt of 10, 000. 15/10/99 has died in the Irish Republic at the age of 82. * Londonderry born Locke, who had been ill for some time, passed away at a nursing home in Clane, Co Kildare close to where he had lived in retirement. Born Joseph McLaughlin in Derry's Creggan area, he will be best remembered for his songs Hear My Song and Blaze Away.
