Queen Elizabeth II greets singer Sir Cliff Richard, designer Zandra Rhodes (left) and Mrs Kath Smith, 87, a charity worker at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, at Buckingham Palace, London, during a special reception paying tribute to the contribution of more than 400 pioneers in British life. Representatives from business, community groups, fashion, food, music, science, the arts, government, academia and health will be present at the event hosted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Famous names including Delia Smith, Pete Waterman, Sir Cliff Richard, Simon Weston, Zandra Rhodes, Sir Jackie Stewart, Trevor Baylis and Sir Roger Bannister will view the exhibits, which all relate to pioneering achievements. Broadcasting and politics are among themes covered, as well as individuals such as Florence Nightingale.
