No19 Fighter Squadron, based at Duxford, Cambs., flying their two blade propeller Supermarine Spitfire aircraft in formation in the year of the outbreak of the Second World War. No19 was the first RAF Squadron to be equipped with the new Supermarine Spitfire (1938), the only fighter aircraft to be used throughout the War.

Born on this day in 1938, british actor and hell-raiser extrodinary, Oliver reed A 1967 filer of actor Oliver Reed during a break in filming of Lionel Bart's "Oliver." The 61-year-old actor died today(Sunday) in Malta after being taken ill in a bar in Valletta. In "Oliver" Reed played the role of Bill Sikes.

UK Zoo's - London Zoo at Regents Park - Animals - Tortoise - 1948
'Slow But Sure' The time honoured saying "The Way To A Man's Heart Is Through His Stomach", applys equally where tortoises are concerned. Young Michael Setford, who is sitting on George, the 60 year old Giant Tortoise at London Zoo, found this out when he tried to get George to move along, assisted by his cousin Malcolm Smith, of Uppminster. The youngsters discovered however that 'Old George's appetite for carrots was unlimited and so long as the food was there, he wzs quite contented to remain where he was!
