Entertainment - Road Safety - Green Cross Code Song - London

Comedian Tommy Cooper and constable Edward McLernon, of Manchester and Salford Police, are supported by a "backing group" of pupils from Rackhouse Junior School, Wythenshawe, Manchester, as they sing the "Green Cross Code" song, with words by PC McLernon and song to a traditional folk melody. The song has been recorded by singer Partridge Green and copies of the record and the sheet music are to be supplied to all schools in Manchester and Salford for use in teaching the Green Cross Code, launched last April to train young children to cross the road in safety.

Transport - Panda Pedestrian Crossing - York Road, Waterloo Station, London

Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport, and A. C. Dennis, Mayor of Lambeth, are the first to use the new Panda pedestrian crossing at York Road, outside Waterloo Station. The minister had just inaugurated the crossing, first of the new type to operate in London. The Panda crossings, to be tried for an experimental 12 month period, have flashing warning lights operated by push button controls. They have blunted chevron markings on the carriageway and black and amber striped beacons.

Religion - Cardinal Bernard Griffin - Home Park, Plymouth

Plymouth commemorated 'the simple son of a Wessex land-owner' with a colourful pageant in the Home Park, Plymouth Argyle Football Club's ground, attended by 15, 000 Roman Catholics led by Cardinal Bernard Griffin, Archbishop of Westminster. The pageant recalled the life and death 1200 years ago of Winfred, the Saxon who became known as the Apostle of Germany, and later was canonised as St. Boniface. Winfred was martyred by marauding tribesmen in the territory called Friesland, now known as Holland. Picture shows Cardinal Bernard Griffin in the procession prior to the High Mass which followed the pageant. Cardinal Joseph Wendel, Archbishop of Munich and Friesing celebrated the High Mass.
