Millennium Bell 1
Mike McCann, the Keeper of the Great Clock, makes checks on the Big Ben bell in the run up to New Year's Eve, when the bell, which hangs in the 102 metre high Clock Tower in the Houses of Parliament, in London will mark the turn of the Millennium. * The bell, which weighs 13 tons and took 16 horses to haul it through Whitehall, is tuned to the note E. The bell strikes the hour while others mark the quarters, and the accuaracy of the clock is controlled by placing pennies inside the mechanism. Picture taken December 24, 1999.
