Comic actor Leonard Rossiter, who played Rigsby in the ITV comedy series Rising Damp, at Sheekeys restaurant in London, for the start of the Oyster Festival. * 23/02/02 Broadcaster Sue MacGregor has told Radio 4's Desert Island Discs how she regrets her secret affair with the late Rising Damp star Rossiter. The 60-year-old presenter said she had agonised about whether to reveal details of the five-year relationship in her forthcoming autobiography. The BBC Radio 4 Today programme presenter, who retires this month, describes in her autobiography Woman of Today how her affair with Rossiter continued until his death in 1984. This edition of Desert Island Discs is to broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Sunday February 24 2002.
Science - Beat the Electronic Brain
International chess master Jon Speelman, the 1978 British champion, did some hard thinking in a match with a new electronic opponent, the 279 Sargon 2.5 chess computer. Jon Speelman was one of only 2 players (the other was ex-Welsh national champion Manny Rayner) who beat the computer on the fifth of it's seven levels of difficulty. Jon persuaded it to resign after 40 moves.
