Enoch Powell on London street
Striding out near his London home in South Eaton Place is Mr Enoch Powell, Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South-West, whose controversial speech on race relations in Birmingham has led to his dismissal from Mr Edward Heath's Shadow Cabinet. * A statement from Mr Heath said that he told Mr Powell that he considered the speech "racialist in tone and liable to exacerbate racial tensions..." 31/12/98 Personal papers belonging to Prime Minister Harold Wilson show officials were worried about public unrest surrounding the decision by Attorney General Elwyn Jones not to pursue the maverick Tory defence spokesman for inciting racial hatred in April, 1968. Downing Street was anxious to "play it cool" over the announcement that Enoch Powell was to escape prosecution for his notorious River of Blood speech, it emerged in papers released by the Public Records Office under the 30 year rule.
