Eager hands of London children stretch out for sweets which were not only off the ration but were being distributed for free. The hand-out was at the front gates of Batger's, the confectioner manufacturers, at Clapham Common, London, when the firm gave away sweets to celebrate derationing. Preparing the old locomotive Bluebell at Sheffield Park, Sussex, for reopening of the Bluebell Line. Paul Willis, 18, is on the loco and hands part of the funnel to Harold May, general manager of the new Bluebell Line. Also pictured is Albert Mills, permanent way inspector. The Bluebell Line, so called because it runs through 4-and-half-miles of the prettiest Sussex countryside, was closed by British Railways as uneconomic, but has been put back into working order by a group of enthusiasts. It will operate at weekends and in the summer. The locomotive Bluebell was formerly with the South Coast and Chatham Railway.

Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station - Chapelcross, Dumfriesshire

Number One reactor is now generating at Scotland's first 40m nuclear power station, which will be officially opened tomorrow (May 2) at Chapelcross, near Annan, in Dumfriesshire. The station, built on a disused airfield, will increase Britain's supplies of military plutonium and when in full production will provide come 140 megawatts of electricity for the national grid. Its other three reactors will be commissioned at intervals throughout the remainder of this year. Construction of the Chapelcross station - which is of the same type as Calder Hall, Cumberland, is the first nuclear power station in the world to produce electricity on an industrial scale - was begun in October 1955.
