Signs to Save Red Squirrels
A red squirrel in the woods at Wallington, Northuberland, nr Ponteland, where local wildlife lover Penny Hewitt, 50, has erected signs alerting motorists to the native squirrels in the Darrass Hall area. The native squirrels, under threat from increasing numbers of grey squirrels, forage for food in the large gardens in Ponteland, but many fall foul of speeding motorists, with Penny having counted nine victims in recent months.

A small fishing boat goes out to sea along the north east coast near Tynemouth as a storm clouds roll in. Homes in northern Scotland will be the first battered by freezing temperatures as mercury plummets below the seasonal average, forecasters have warned.
