Transport - British Rail - Dr Richard Beeching - New 1 million Railway Station at Plymouth - Devon

Dr Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board, cuts the tape to open the new 1 million railway station at Plymouth, Devon. After the ceremony he was asked about a newspaper's reference to the building as a 'white elephant' when many branch lines were being closed. Dr Beeching replied branch lines were the subject of a thorough study and it was not sensible to suppose one could reverse a decision taken five or six years ago to build a new station. This is the first new station to be built under British Railways's modernisation scheme.

Entertainment - Jazz Music - Kenny Ball - Oxford Street - London

Four 'trad' bandleaders have reason to look satisfied - the 400 cheque they're surveying was raised by their efforts and will go to Derek Tearle and David Backhouse, two members of Mike Cotton's jazz band, who were seriously injured in a car crash three weeks ago and are still in hospital. From left, Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Mike Cotton and Terry Lightfoot. They raised the money by giving their services in a performance at a jazz club in Oxford Street, London.
