18/09/1970 - ON THIS DAY IN 1970: Jimi Hendrix dies on this day in 1970. Pictured at the recent Isle of Wight music festival is pop singer Jimi Hendrix who was taken dead to St. Mary Abbot's Hospital, Kensington, London. German-born artist Monika Danneman, a former girlfriend of Hendrix, has been found dead in a fume-filled car near her home, police said.

The 'Evening Star', a 2-10-0 steam locomotive, as she steamed slowly out of Swindon Works after her naming ceremony. 'Evening Star' is the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways as a result of the dieselisation and electrification policy which has been adopted by the railways in their present modernisation plan.

Royal Navy - HMS Conqueror launch - Laird's shipyard, Birkenhead
The Royal navy's 3, 500 ton nuclear powered submarine, moving down the slipway at her launch at Cammell Laird's shipyard, Birkenhead. She was named by Lady McGeoch, wife of Vice-Admiral Sir Ian McGeoch, flag officer, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Conqueror's primary role is to search and destroy enemy submarines.
