The work was written to mark the occasion of the Jubilee of The Save the Children Fund. It will be sung by the Wandsworth School Boy's choir at the Fund's Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service at St. Paul's Cathedral and at the Aldeburgh Festival in June by the same choir.

The words were taken from the text of German poet and dramatist Bertold Brecht, and the ballad relates the harrowing experiences of a band of children lost int he wilderness of wartime Poland in 1939
