Human Interest - Housewives digging for coal - Priory Road - Dudley
Housewives of Dudley, Worcestershire, take part in a scramble for coal that was dug up by workmen making a trench for a new gas main in Priory Road. The trench is only six-feet deep, but that was far enough down to find the coal and start the rush. An official of the National Coal Board said officially the coal belonged to the board, but so far no one has hindered the amateur miners who have been using sacks, buckets and prams to clear the coal away.
